What do I say anymore?
This game was brutal. We were leading. Then we weren’t. Then it looked like we were going to lose. Then we tied it up to force OT.
Then Tampa Bay hits us with the proverbial steel chair to the skull to finish us off 4-3 in overtime.
Kind of like this. We’re The Rock staggering around, the Lightning is Mankind and reality is Stone Cold. (I’m on a wrestling kick tonight).
Cliff Notes: Things started out positively. Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first, Boston College Eagle (!) Noah Hanifin scored his first goal since Dec. 1 to tie things up. The good Dr. Derek Ryan added another to put the Canes out front 2-1. They managed to hang onto that lead all the way until the third period.
That’s when things started to turn. Like a heel turn.
Tyler Johnson made it 2-2 about halfway through the third. Nikita Kucherov added another to make 3-2. Things were looking bleak, until Jay McClement bailed us out with this:
That’s when good karma is supposed to happen, RIGHT? That’s when we’re supposed to catch a break, RIGHT? That’s when we steal a game on the road, RIGHT?
Instead Victor Hedman adds a soul-crusher in the extra frame to seal the win for the Lightning.
Also, we outshot Tampa 31-16, so there’s that.
Storm Category: 2. I liked the fight, but it sucks when we aren’t the dominant weather-themed team in the NHL.
Goal of the Game: McClement’s, but I’m excited to see Hanifin score.
Enemy of the City: The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. These Tampa Bay Rowdies fans have been the scourge of the MLS expansion process. Their arrogance and entitlement has shown through in their criticism of JP’s and Moneybags’ thoughtful expansion analysis pieces. Got two words for ya, Tampa!
Bill Goldberg says YOU’RE NEXT! (I tried to find a good Goldberg GIF, but when I searched for one on GIPHY I only got Whoopi Goldberg results).
Actually, Arizona is next. One here on Friday, then out in Phoenix on Sunday. Then the craptacular Avs who managed to beat us despite being literally the worst team in the league by a friggin’ mile. Seriously, the Avs have 37 points. Twoof them came from us.
The struggling #Redvolution is bringing up the rear in the East. 25-25-10 is good enough for 60 points — tied for last with Detroit as of this writing. We’re nine points out of the last Wild Card spot.
