Recap: State Beats GT

The streak is over! The Pack holds on to beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 71-69, for their first win since beating Duke at Cameron Indoor on January 23rd.

Playing Hard? Team defense? Movement in the half-court offense? Mark Gottfried wears glasses???  The Wolfpack did the type of things they’ve been sorely lacking. The guts were there on the defensive end and the Pack outboarded the Jackets by 12. Despite missing a lot of open jumpers, it was nice to see the off-ball and ball movement we saw tonight. And finally, who the hell knew ole’ Mark wore glasses?!? News to me!

Also, let’s just get this out of the way now. GT’s not a great barometer, but the Pack could be dangerous come tournament time. They obviously won’t win it, but Coach Gott will be sure to make State fans look.

Player(s) of the Game: Abdul Malik Abu & Ted “The King” Kapita & Torin Dorn

“Mike…this is crazy…you simply cannot give this award to three players!”  Well, I just DID!

Usually, I would’ve said Terry Henderson or DSJ, but no way the Pack wins this ballgame without the effort (some might even call it yeoman’s work) that these three put in on the boards and on the defensive end. These guys played lock down D on “The Big Fundamental” Ben Lammers, who didn’t make a field goal until the waning moments. Bigs came to play, period.

What’s Next:

Hang on to your hats! The Pack hosts Paul Westphal’s “Run & Gun” Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday!

They’ll actually play Tony Bennett’s Virginia Cavaliers. I’ll probably do something more exciting, like pull weeds outside.

Cynical State Fan Line of the Night:

“The big difference tonight was the way the Pack was able to defend the Free Throw Line. GT shot 13-22.”

Wife Quote of the Night:

“Look at these guys! Acting like they care tonight!”
