HURRICANES 3, SABRES 1
JFK here … you can thank me for this win. When the Sabres play the Canes and I watch, the Canes win. That goes back to Game 5 of the 2006 Eastern Conference Finals, when I graced the then-RBC Center with my presence and we won 4-3 in OT. Yeah, remember that? We won the Stanley Cup that year. Rock you like a hurricane. You’re welcome.
Anyway, let’s get to it.
Storm Category: I’m giving it a 2. It looked like a 4 in the first period but it weakened significantly before it made landfall. We had a few opportunities to blow this thing open but couldn’t make it happen and let Buffalo hang around for longer than I would like.
Quick and Dirty Recap: The good guys jumped out to a quick lead thanks to Jeff Skinner, who pump-faked a slap shot and snapped it by Robin Lehner. Justin Faulk added another later in the first on an assist from Lee Stempniak. The Canes couldn’t convert on a couple of power plays in the second. Buffalo pulled within a goal on a Johan Larsson wrister (assisted by Marcus Foligno and Sam Reinhart) at 5:32 in the 3rd, making things a little uncomfortable. Sebastian Aho sealed it on an empty-netter with a minute to go.
‘Cane of the Game: I give the nod to Jeff Skinner. His goal early in the first period (see above) set the tone. He leads the team with 13 goals and 27 points on the season. Honorable mention, Cam Ward with 22 saves.
What’s Next: The Hurricanes host the Boston Bruins Friday night at PNC Arena. The Bs come into the game in 3rd place in the Atlantic (17-14-3).
